If you are planning to take an extended vacation to the beautiful country of Australia, chances are you will need a car rental to get around. Because the many excellent tourist sites are fairly spread out from one another, it makes financial sense to drive a car rental yourself as opposed to hiring a taxi and driver. If you are a person who loves to travel and really loves the freedom of the open road as well as saving money, driving your own car rental makes perfect sense.

In order to drive in Australia as a non-resident, you will need to get an IDP, or International Driving Permit. Thankfully, getting an IDP is simple as long as you already hold a driver's license from your native country. Remember, an International Driving Permit is not considered a permanent replacement for the driver's license you already have.  Instead, an IDP is a supplemental driver's license that will give you the privileges you need to drive your own car hire not only in Australia, but also over 150 other countries throughout the world.

For those who live in the United States, the American Automobile Touring Alliance is a great resource for obtaining IDP information. Although there is a little more effort required in obtain this type of driver's license, the money you will save from driving your own car rental will be worth the extra effort. Of course, before you even find a car hire company to rent an automobile you plan to drive, make sure you have your IDP in hand first.
